BACKGROUND
Since the premiere of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on September 13, 1993, music director Max Weinberg has led the Max Weinberg 7 which is widely regarded as the "best band in late night TV". Weinberg has also become a featured performer in Late Night comedy skits, including "Max's Greatest Hits," "Max on Max," "The Band Is Jealous," "Max's Poetry," and the popular send-ups of NBC's public service announcements.
In 2000, The Max Weinberg 7 released their first CD. The self-titled release features a collection of the familiar music audiences have been enjoying for years on "Late Night."
In February 1999, Weinberg took a leave of absence from "Late Night" to join Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for a historic reunion. This was their first world tour in over a decade and one of the most anticipated and celebrated concert tours of 1999/2000. The tour wrapped up on July 1, 2000 after an explosive ten-night-stand at New York's Madison Square Garden and has returned Weinberg to the helm of the Max Weinberg 7.
As the long-time drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band (1974-1989) Weinberg has performed for millions of people around the world and been featured at many prestigious events, including the 1993 and 1997 Presidential Inauguration Galas, the 1995 Grammy Awards and the 1995 Gala Concert for the dedication of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, where he rejoined his former group. Called "the rhythmic backbone of the E Street Band," by Robert Palmer of The New York Times, Weinberg was invited to perform in the East Room of the White House in December 1996 and served as the music director for Comic Relief 8 starring Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams at Radio City Music hall in New York City.
Cited by the "Playboy"Pop and Jazz Music Poll (1985) and the "Rolling Stone" Critics Poll (1986) as Best Drummer, Weinberg has performed or recorded with some of contemporary music's biggest names including Sting, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr, Natalie Merchant, Pete Townshend of the Who and Meatloaf. Weinberg's performances on the classic rock albums "Born in the U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and "Bat Out of Hell" by Meatloaf earned him the distinction of having played on the first and second largest selling albums in rock history.
Weinberg is also the author of "The Big Beat: Conversations with Rock's Great Drummers," in which he interviewed many of his personal musical heroes, including Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. He is the producer of the Rhino Records series "Max Weinberg: Let There Be Drums" and has also performed his one-man show, "An Evening with Max Weinberg," at more than 150 colleges throughout the United States and Canada. During this multimedia presentation, Weinberg takes his audience through the ups and downs of his 25-plus year career, with a special emphasis on his "Late Night" experiences.

Max Weinberg (born April 13, 1951) is an American drummer and television personality, most widely known as the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and as the bandleader for Conan O'Brien on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.
Weinberg grew up in suburban New Jersey and began drumming at an early age. He attended college planning to be a lawyer but got his big break in music in 1974 when he won an audition to become the drummer for Springsteen. Weinberg became a mainstay of Springsteen's long concert performances. Springsteen dissolved the band in 1989, and Weinberg spent several years considering a law career and trying the business end of the music industry before deciding he wanted to continue with drumming.
In 1993, Weinberg got the role as bandleader of The Max Weinberg 7 for Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Weinberg's drums-driven jump blues sound and his role as a comic foil prospered along with the show, giving him a second career. In 1999, Springsteen re-formed the E Street Band for a series of tours and albums; Weinberg worked out an arrangement that allowed him to play with both O'Brien and Springsteen. In 2009, Weinberg moved to the short-lived Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien as leader of Max Weinberg and The Tonight Show Band. After that ended, he began touring with his own ensembles, and in 2010 chose not to follow O'Brien to the new Conan show. Weinberg continued playing with Springsteen, and in 2014 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band.

The Max Weinberg 7
Fans of the music interspersed throughout Late Night With Conan O'Brien will find The Max Weinberg 7 to be a fun swing-tinged rock album (or maybe a rock-influenced swing album). Led strongly by the vocals and guitar work of Jimmy Vivino as much as the drumwork of the bandleader, the songs are well performed but a little repetitive; many tunes ("Walk Right In," "Jumpted," "Rock This Joint") are essentially the song title repeated over and over with a basic jump blues vamp behind it, which is probably fun on the dance floor but a little tiring in a casual listen. However, the Bobby Day-esque "Buzz, Buzz, Buzz" would sound at home in any '50s jukebox, and the Dr. John-driven "Catch 'Em in the Act" is a great piece of New Orleans true-crime pulp fiction. For the most part, the instrumental pieces sound as though they'll be interrupted by commercials at any moment (just like on Weinberg's TV gig) but the performances are good and the production is bright. New Jersey residents looking for the next E Street Band won't find it here, but fans of well-crafted small-ensemble swing will be satisfied.

William Bradford Champlin (born May 21, 1947) is an American singer, musician, arranger, producer, and songwriter. He formed the band Sons of Champlin in 1965, which still performs today, and was a member of the band Chicago from 1981–2009.[1] He performed lead vocals on three of Chicago's biggest hits of the 1980s, 1984's "Hard Habit to Break" and "Look Away" and "I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love" in 1988. During live shows, he performed the lower, baritone, vocal parts originated by original guitarist Terry Kath, who had died in 1978. He has won multiple Grammy Awards for songwriting.
Early career
As a child, Champlin demonstrated a talent for piano, and eventually picked up the guitar after being inspired by Elvis Presley. He started a band, The Opposite Six, while at Tamalpais High School, in Mill Valley, California and went on to study music in college, but was encouraged by a professor to drop out of school and pursue music professionally.
The Sons of Champlin and Solo Career
The Opposite Six, Champlin's band from high school,[2] had changed their name to the Sons of Champlin[3] and had recorded a number of well-reviewed (although not commercially successful) albums (including Loosen Up Naturally and Circle Filled With Love) by 1977, when 30-year-old Champlin moved to Los Angeles. During the 1969–1970 period, Champlin was uncertain of the future of the Sons of Champlin, so he joined with Jerry Miller of Moby Grape in The Rhythm Dukes, following the departure of Don Stevenson. The band achieved a significant degree of acclaim as an opening act for many popular performers of that time, and recorded one album, ultimately released in 2005 "Flashback".[4]
In LA he began extensive studio session work. He was especially in demand for his singing, appearing on hundreds of recordings throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) awarded Champlin the Most Valuable Player peer award for male background vocalists in 1980.[5]
Sons of Champlin
Champlin won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Song in 1980 for co-writing the hit song "After The Love Has Gone" with Jay Graydon and David Foster (which was made popular by Earth, Wind & Fire) and a second Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Song in 1983 for co-writing the song "Turn Your Love Around" with Jay Graydon and Steve Lukather (which was made popular by George Benson).
In 1979, Champlin was approached by the then-widely successful band REO Speedwagon to add background vocals on some of their songs appearing on their album Nine Lives; which was the last album in which REO Speedwagon had a predominantly hard-rock edge.[6]
This work allowed Champlin to become acquainted with other in-demand session men such as Jay Graydon, David Foster, and Steve Lukather (of Toto). Among other artists that he worked with were Al Jarreau, George Duke, Boz Scaggs, Elton John, The Tubes, Lee Ritenour, Amy Grant, and Nicky Trebek. He also appeared on Barry Manilow's 1982 EP, Oh, Julie! and was a featured background vocalist on Manilow's Here Comes the Night[7]
Bill Champlin
In 1986, Champlin dueted with Patti LaBelle on Last Unbroken Heart for Miami Vice and was released that same year on the album "Miami Vice II"[8]
In 1991, he provided backing vocals for Kim Carnes' album Checkin' Out the Ghosts (released only in Japan); in 1997, Champlin revived the Sons of Champlin and continued to play with them between tours with Chicago. Throughout the 1990s he released several solo albums and toured Europe and Japan in support of his live solo album "Mayday".[9] In 2009 Champlin collaborated with the Italian-American composer, arranger, and producer Manuel De Peppe and in 2011, Champlin played the Hammond B3 organ on the songs "Moon Cry" and "Mississippi Creek" by Curt Campbell and the Eclectic Beast Band.[10]
He and second wife, singer/songwriter Tamara Champlin, were part of the Scandinavian tour headlined by Leon Russell that also featured Joe Williams & Peter Friestedt.[11] Champlin teamed up with conductor Lars Erik Gudim and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (KORK) in Oslo, Norway for a special performance that aired December 27, 2011 on NRK TV in Norway.[12] In 2014-2017 he performed several acoustic shows with Tamara Champlin in the US, Europe, Japan, South & Central America where they joined the Rock Pack Tour,[13][14] guested with California Transit Authority featuring Danny Seraphine,[15] played concerts to benefit Eddie Tuduri's Rhythmic Arts Project with the Pockets.[16][17] They entertained with other indie artists for the Lone Wolf Entertainment Foundation[18] and rejoined the re-formed Sons of Champlin for a series of shows in the Northwest.[19][20] In 2017, he and Tamara were part of the Ambrosia & Friends Tour.[21]
Solo releases
David Foster produced two solo albums for Champlin: Single (1978) and Runaway (1981). Both albums sold poorly due to lack of adequate promotion by his record company, although the latter album did include a pair of minor hits on the Billboard Hot 100 ("Sara" and "Tonight, Tonight"). In the 1990s, Champlin released five more solo albums: No Wasted Moments, Burn Down the Night, Through It All, He Started to Sing, and Mayday. The last was a live recording of songs from his career, and included musicians Greg Mathieson, Jerry Lopez, Eddie Garcia, Tom Saviano and Rochon Westmoreland.
In September 2008, Champlin released No Place Left To Fall and a companion DVD in Japan on JVC/Victor. The record was produced by Champlin and Mark Eddinger, and featured musicians Bruce Gaitsch, George Hawkins, Jr., Billy Ward, Tamara Champlin, Will Champlin, and Eddinger, with guest appearances by Steve Lukather, Peter Cetera, Michael English, Jerry Lopez and enlisted such songwriting/player greats as Jay Graydon, Andreas Carlsson, Diane Warren, Michael Caruso, Tom Saviano and Dennis Matkosky. The record was released in Europe by Zinc Music in December 2008 and in the U.S. by DreamMakers Music in August 2009.
Tenure with Chicago
Bill Champlin
In 1978, the day after Chicago guitarist Terry Kath died, the band reached out to Champlin suggesting that he audition to take Kath's place. Champlin turned down the offer, saying he could not fill that role.
In early 1981, Champlin collaborated with Chicago's drummer, Danny Seraphine, by singing some backgrounds with Peter Cetera on a non-Chicago project. Seraphine and Champlin co-wrote a few songs for Chicago that year, and Champlin was invited to sing one of those songs, "Sonny Think Twice", as a guest vocalist. Champlin suggested to Seraphine that David Foster might be a good choice as a producer for Chicago at that time. Seraphine began a campaign to get Champlin into the group, and he joined before the end of 1981.
The band did collaborate with Foster on their next album, 1982's platinum certified Chicago 16. Champlin was featured singing several songs, including "Bad Advice", "Follow Me", and "Sonny Think Twice", which he co-wrote and had originally guested on in 1981. Champlin also shared vocals with Cetera on "Waiting for You to Decide".
1984's Chicago 17 enhanced Champlin's presence in the group, when he wrote several songs ("Please Hold On" and "Remember the Feeling") and sang (with Cetera) the hit single "Hard Habit to Break".
In 1988, Champlin's voice appeared prominently on several major hit singles from Chicago 19: "Look Away", "I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love", and "You're Not Alone". That year, he also sang the theme to the television show In the Heat of the Night.[22]
In 1990, Champlin wrote, produced, and sang lead on "Hearts in Trouble", a song for the movie soundtrack of Days of Thunder. Originally a solo song, the producers of the movie decided, for marketing purposes, that it be released under the name of Chicago. So, the band's horn section added a brass arrangement to the track, and subsequently, it was released as a single. In the summer of 1990, Chicago launched their Hearts in Trouble Tour.[23]
In 1991, Chicago released the album Twenty 1, featuring the Champlin-sung hit "Chasin' the Wind", which peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's last top 40 hit on that chart.[24]
In 1993, Chicago recorded its "lost album", not released until 2008 as Chicago XXXII: Stone of Sisyphus. Champlin sings on the tracks "Mah-Jong", "Cry for The Lost", "The Show Must Go On", and "Plaid".
Champlin made major contributions to Chicago's big-band tribute Night & Day Big Band in 1995 and to their 1998 Christmas album Chicago XXV: The Christmas Album, including the additional track "What's It Gonna Be, Santa?" on the album's 2003 re-release. Champlin co-wrote four of the songs on the band's 2006 album Chicago XXX.
In 2009, Chicago and Champlin announced he would be departing from the group, which he did mid-tour during the band's summer tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. Chicago's management released a statement saying, "Bill Champlin is no longer in Chicago. He was a long time band member and we wish him all the best as he embarks on his new solo project, for which he's worked long and hard." Meanwhile, Champlin's publicist released a statement saying, "After 28 years with Chicago, singer-songwriter-keyboardist Bill Champlin is parting ways with the classic jazz/rock band to focus once again on his solo career."
Champlin formed a band in 2018, entitled "Bill Champlin and the WunderGround" that included members singer-guitarist, Gary Falcone; singer, Tamara Champlin; bass player, Bill Bodine and Ambrosia's drummer, Burleigh Drummond and keyboardist-singer, Mary Harris[25] releasing an album "Bleeding Secrets"[26] and played shows in the Los Angeles California area to promote and support the music
Personal life
Bill Champlin resides in Los Angeles, California. He has two sisters, Mimi Champlin and Sally Champlin. Champlin was married in the 1970s and had two children, Bradford Raymond Champlin and Amy Jo Kelly. Champlin has been married since 1982 to his second wife, singer-songwriter Tamara Champlin, and together they have son Will Champlin, who finished third on Season 5 (2013) of The Voice.[27] In 1983, the same year son Will was born, Bill and Tamara performed music together on screen in the film Copper Mountain.

Singer/songwriter/keyboard player/guitarist Bill Champlin has been a rock journeyman in a career dating back to the 1960s. Starting in 1966, Champlin was the pivotal figure in a San Francisco-based group called the Sons of Champlin that existed and made records off and on for over a decade without gaining a great deal of notice. In 1981, Champlin became a member of Chicago, with whom he has recorded and toured ever since, while releasing the occasional solo album, sometimes only in Japan. He scored two singles chart entries in 1982 with "Tonight Tonight" and "Sara," duetted with Patti LaBelle on "The Last Unbroken Heart" from the soundtrack to the TV series Miami Vice in 1987, and sang with Brenda Russell on jazz saxophonist Tom Scott's Keep This Love Alive album in 1991.

Carmen Grillo
Guitarist Carmen Grillo is one of the many musicians to perform with an incarnation of the legendary Tower Of Power over that act's lengthy career. A noted session musician, his credits in the studio have included contributions to releases by David Lasley, Tom Scott, and Donna Summer. In 1991, Grillo joined Tower Of Power, appearing on that year's Monster On A Leash set. He spent much of the remainder of the ‘90s performing and recording with them before leaving to pursue other projects. In 1999, Grillo produced long-time Tower Of Power bass player Rocco Prestia's solo debut, Everybody On The Bus, and Grillo would make his own solo debut with Both Sides Of The Coin several years later.

Mindi Abair is an American two time Grammy Award nominated[1] saxophonist, vocalist, author, and National Trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the organization that puts on the Grammy Awards show.
Her solo career has produced ten No. 1 radio singles, two No. 1 Billboard Jazz CDs, and four more solo CDs that have landed No. 5 and above on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts. She was the featured saxophonist for the 2011 and 2012 seasons of American Idol, performed with the rock band Aerosmith,[2] for their 2012 Summer Tour, joined Bruce Springsteen and Max Weinberg for a night at the Beacon Theater and has played with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra three times on Late Show with David Letterman.[citation needed]
Performances and releases
In 1991, after college, Abair moved to Los Angeles, California, where she began booking her band into clubs, coffee shops and hotels. She played solo on the street at 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California and garnered the attention of jazz keyboardist Bobby Lyle, who hired her to record on his Power of Touch CD and tour with him. Her touring opportunities expanded over the next decade, as she toured as a saxophonist/singer and keyboardist with Adam Sandler, John Tesh, Jonathan Butler, Teena Marie, Rick Braun as well. Abair was featured on saxophone in the Go West video "Tell Me". And in 1996, she appeared on Adam Sandler's HBO Special and recorded on his platinum CD What's Your Name? playing the saxophone solo on "The Lonesome Kicker" and singing on various tracks.
In 1999, Abair joined the Backstreet Boys for their Millennium World Tour, and spent the next year and a half as their saxophonist, keyboardist and percussionist. She assembled Mandy Moore's first band and acted as musical director, keyboardist, background singer and percussionist for many of Moore's first television appearances and shows.
When not touring, Abair released her first complete solo album, Always and Never the Same, an all vocal pop record, independently.[4] Abair performed in local Los Angeles rock clubs to promote the record, in addition to her touring with the Backstreet Boys.
In 2003, Abair signed to Verve Records and released the album It Just Happens That Way, which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart[5] and remained in the Top 10 for 19 consecutive weeks. Billboard named the album one of the top 10 Contemporary Jazz CDs of the year. Her hit single "Lucy's" was No. 1 on R&R for a record-breaking eight weeks.[citation needed]
In 2004, Abair released "Come As You Are", which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts.[6] She followed that with Life Less Ordinary in 2006, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart[7] and remained in the top 20 for 45 weeks. Her songs "True Blue" and "Bloom" hit No. 1 on R&R.
Abair signed to Concord Records in 2007 and released her genre breaking Stars in 2008 which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart.[8] Her single "Stars" (co-written and produced by Matthew Hager) charted at No. 29 Adult Contemporary R&R simultaneously with her single "Smile" which reached No. 1 on the R&R jazz airplay charts. She released "Hi-Fi Stereo" in 2010[9] which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.[8] The album spawned the No. 1 hit "Be Beautiful" written by David Ryan Harris.[8]
In 2013, Abair collaborated with Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, and Gerald Albright on the album Summer Horns.[citation needed] It was nominated for a Grammy Award.
On May 27, 2014, Abair released[10] "Wild Heart" on Concord Records imprint, Heads Up International. The record debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz chart and No. 152 on the Billboard Top 200.[11] The record, which included collaborations with the late Gregg Allman, Joe Perry and Trombone Shorty, was nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in the 2015 Grammy Awards.[1]
Abair received the Mad Skills Award at the third annual She Rocks at NAMM Show (organized by NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants) on January 24, 2015.[12] Held in Anaheim, California, the event was founded by the Women's International Music Network.[12]
In 2015, after working with Randy Jacobs (founder of The Boneshakers) on the tour for "Wild Heart," he and Abair decided to form Mindi Abair and The Boneshakers, which includes Mindi Abair (Saxophone, Vocals), Randy Jacobs (Guitar, Vocals), Sweet Pea Atkinson (Vocals), Rodney Lee (Keys), Derek Frank (Bass, Vocals), and Third Richardson (Drums, Vocals).[13] In late 2015, they released a live album Mindi Abair and The Boneshakers Live in Seattle via Pledge Music and HeadsUp, which featured a performance from Seattle's Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in February 2015. In summer 2017, the group announced their first studio project via Randy Jacobs' website.[14] Recorded over five days at EastWest Studios with producer Kevin Shirley,The EastWest Sessions, included 11 blues and rock tracks, was released on September 15, 2017.[15] The blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa and Fantastic Negrito were featured guests.[16]]. The album debuted at No. 3 on Billboard magazine's Blues Album Sales Chart the week of October 7, 2017.[17]
"Pretty Good for a Girl," a tongue-in-cheek track co-written by Abair and Jacobs for the album, inspired Abair to launch the web platform PrettyGoodForAGirl.net. The goal of the website is to celebrate exceptional women and turn "pretty good for a girl" into a phrase of empowerment.[18]
Radio host
In 2007, Abair took over the nationally syndicated radio program Chill with Chris Botti which he had hosted for two years. The name changed to "Chill With Mindi Abair," which she hosted from 2007 to 2015. The focus of the program was chill out music.[19]
Television appearances
Abair featured on the 2011 American Idol season as a soloist with Paul McDonald and Casey Abrams and playing behind contestants Jacob Lusk and Haley Reinhart. Steven Tyler remarked to McDonald after her debut on the show "Forget you, who's your sax player?"[20] Abair was featured on the 2012 American Idol season, performing with Phillip Phillips. Abair appeared with Phillips six times as a featured saxophonist, performing the songs "U Got It Bad" originally by Usher, "Disease" originally by Matchbox Twenty, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Movin' Out" originally by Billy Joel, "In The Midnight Hour" originally by Wilson Pickett and "Give A Little More" originally by Maroon 5. Tyler was so impressed with Abair that he invited her to join Aerosmith on the summer leg of their 2012 world tour playing sax and singing backing vocals.[20] Abair performed a duet with Joey Kramer during his drum solo.[citation needed]
She filled in as the saxophonist with the CBS Orchestra on the Late Show with David Letterman on April 3 and 4, 2012.[21] She sat in with the band again on July 29, 2014, and she also performed her original songs "Wild Heart" and "Train."
Abair has also appeared on The Tavis Smiley Show and more than once on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[22]
Other ventures
Book
In 2011, Abair self-published her first book, How To Play Madison Square Garden, a guide to stage performance. She collaborated on it with her father Lance Abair and Ross Cooper. It was released as both a Kindle electronic format and in paperback, and has a 5 star rating.[citation needed] John Taylor of Duran Duran (and veteran of Madison Square Garden) said of the book: "For the next generation of wanna-be arena-fillers, there is now an alternative to spending years on the road, playing empty dives, and pimping out the bass player to get radio play. Mindi Abair's book gives away every professional secret of how to make it to Madison Square Garden. And how to get an encore!"[23]
National Academy of Recording Arts And Sciences
In 2009, Abair was elected as a Governor on the Board of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, serving for three years until 2012, when she was elected as Secretary. She spent one year serving as Secretary. In 2013, Abair was elected to a two-year term as the President of the Los Angeles Chapter, taking over the position from the previous president, MC Lyte. Mindi was elected to a 2-year term as National Trustee of the Recording Academy in 2015.

Mindi Abair is an American, Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz, R&B, and blues saxophonist and vocalist. She is also an author of the instructional book How to Play Madison Square Garden, and a National Trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Abair's gritty, dynamic, soulful, and funky sound has resulted in ten number one radio singles, and four albums that have landed inside the Top Five on the Contemporary Jazz chart. She hosted the SiriusXM radio program "Chill with Mindi Abair" between 2007 and 2015. As a studio musician, among her dozens of credits are recordings with artists ranging from Bobby Lyle and Michael Feinstein to Mocean Worker, Keb Mo', and Bobby Rush.
Love
Born on tour into a musical family, Mindi Abair was playing piano by the age of five. Within three years, she was playing saxophone and writing songs. She made her way through Berklee performing all kinds of music, from jazz to rock to R&B. Upon moving back to Los Angeles, Abair started her own band. She also took on session work with artists as diverse as the Gap Band, Adam Sandler, Mandy Moore, John Tesh, Teena Marie, and the Backstreet Boys. During this time, she worked on creating her own sound and released her debut disc in 1999. The Backstreet Boys connection really paid off for her, and her website and CD (entitled Love) took off. The year 2000 saw the release of the follow-up, Always and Never the Same, and shortly thereafter, Abair signed with GRP Records. A sophom*ore effort, It Just Happens That Way, was issued in 2003. "Lucy's," "Save the Last Dance," and the album's title track went on to impact Top Ten radio. A year later, Abair returned with Come as You Are, her second set produced with her writing partner Matthew Hager. In 2006, Abair released Life Less Ordinary, which featured guest vocals from Lalah Hathaway and Keb' Mo', and also performed at the Governor's Ball, the official Oscars afterparty. The following year, she appeared on guitarist Peter White's (with whom she had performed frequently) Christmas album, but 2008 saw a return to her solo material (and an introduction to Abair as a singer) with Stars. In 2010, Abair delivered the soul-jazz-inspired In Hi-Fi Stereo, which once again featured a mix of instrumental jazz with a few Abair vocal numbers. Abair returned in 2014 with her seventh studio album, Wild Heart, which featured guest spots from Keb' Mo', Joe Perry, Booker T. Jones, and Gregg Allman. It debuted at number one on the jazz album chart, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.
Live in Seattle
In March of 2015, she recorded a live album, Mindi Abair & the Boneshakers: Live in Seattle. Her backing band is actually an all-star, standalone touring and recording unit that includes former Was (Not Was) members Randy Jacobs on guitar and vocalist Sweet Pea Atkinson. The album was released the following September by her own Pretty Good for a Girl Records label, distributed by Concord. It debuted at number three on the Blues Album Chart and hit the top spot on the RMR Blues Rock Album chart in January of the following year. The single "Pretty Good for a Girl," featuring Joe Bonamassa, won the 2018 Independent Music Award for Best Blues Song Fan Award. The band also won eight Independent Blues Awards including Artist of the Year, Best Contemporary Blues Band, and Best Female Artist. In October, Abair and the band issued her first holiday collection, All I Got for Christmas Is the Blues.
