Traces a genealogy of the 'state' in India,whose original caste based stratification, oppression and exploitation remained its foundation. Redefines case-based oppression and exploitation as Colonialism and Racism as process and praxis, following Jean-Paul Sartre. Similarly, re-conceptualizing Adivasis as those who originally escaped or kept themselves away from the plain-based caste oppression and exploitation following James C Scott and Surajit Kr. Saha. Then, showing how caste-based discrimination, oppression and exploitation have been reproduced and how these historical processes are being worked out presently in predominantly Adivasi pockets specifically in Kolhan and Jharkhand and in the rest of the country at large with field-based evidences and data.

The Tadvi Adivasi narratives succinctly underscore the imprudence and insanity of Indian federal and state governments in sanctioning the construction of large-scale development projects' such as the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP). Dam development is a part of a wider neoliberal project that create capitalist relations and technologies in different forms of economy and modes of livelihood contributing to the process of global primitive accumulation. The expansion of the creation of the global proletariat is facilitated by dismantling customary relations to land, forests, water. The fact that many dams are constructed where marginalized populations exist holding tenuous relations to the environment may not coincide. For capitalism to survive and expand, there not only has to be an increase in capital accumulation sometimes taking the form of technological infrastructure (large dams) but there also has to be 'free labor', a group of people who have no ties to any subsistence base and limited or no alternative to working for wages. An analysis of Tadvi stories and my field observations highlight the limited livelihood opportunities and the socio-political changes Adivasis' are experiencing, in their rehabilitated villages, which has an enormous impact on their everyday lives and future generations. In hindsight, the eminent dislocation and resettlement accentuate the post-colonial Indian state's ideological explanations towards the need for large-scale development, it's unwillingness to assume accountability, it's flimsy commitments to the environment, it's partial and limited interpretations of sustainability, and it's complete lack of responsibility towards excluding millions of populations from their livelihoods.
Fumbling Attempts at Providing "Housing for All"

Promises & Reality is the Citizens' Report on Third Year of NDA Government, 2016--17. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government promised and set a high octane agenda for transforming urban India since it came to power in May 2014. While reviewing its performance across the various verticals of urban development, especially housing and urban poverty, the amplified missions, schemes and projects continue as fumbling attempts to catch the bull by its horns. Stating the Constitutional provisions on the powers of the Union and state governments, and citing the core of urban development as a subject of the state governments, the NDA government has been washing its hands of the urban transformation agenda, which it committed. Whatever the reasons, the government’s performance during its third year in office has been largely of a colourful campaign with powerless presentations devoid of action on the ground. In terms of housing and urban poverty, its leadership role remained only in the confines of the four walls of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (MoHUPA) in Delhi. The review "Fumbling Attempts at Providing "Housing for All" by Dr indu prakash singh and Anil Kumar analyses government's policies and efforts, and suggests recommendations towards realising "Housing for All".

This volume examines the processes and impacts of exclusion on the adivasis (tribal or indigenous people) in India and what repercussions these have for their constitutional rights. The chapters explore a wide range of issues connected to the idea of exclusion — land and forest resources, habitats and livelihoods, health and disease management, gender relations, language and schooling, water resources, poverty, governance, markets and technology and development challenges — through case studies from different parts of the country. The book argues that any laws intended to safeguard the fundamental Rights of adivasis must acknowledge the fact that their diverse and complex identities are not hom*ogenous and that uniform laws have failed to address their systemic marginalization since the colonial era. This work appeals for a serious and meaningful political intervention towards tribal development. The volume will be useful to scholars and researchers of tribal and third world studies, sociology and social anthropology, exclusion studies and development studies.

The Displaced Threshing Yard: Involutions of the Rural

In understanding contemporary rural India, it is important to go beyond rendering the rural as synonymous with villages and agriculture or focusing on the ‘agrarian question’. Given the multiple contradictions that the varied ruralities of India are exhibiting, it may be relevant to locate the rural as being constituted by the triangulated structures of reproduced caste, an economics of neglect, and a politics of rescue. The result of such triangulation is evident in the range of involutions that are manifesting across rural India. These include not only a sharpened differentiation of classes and households, but also forms of separation-integration of key rural institutions and structures, and the erosion of rural citizens. All these have implications for liveability and the nature of democracy in rural areas.

Nation's body, river's pulse: Narratives of anti-dam politics in India

In the 1990s, social movements against large dams in India were celebrated for crafting a powerful challenge to dominant policies of development. These grounded struggles were acclaimed for their critique of capitalist industrialization and their advocacy for an alternative model of socially just and ecologically sustainable development. Twenty years later, as large dams continue to be built, their critics have shifted the battle off the streets to new arenas-to courts and government committees, in particular-and switched to a techno-managerial discourse of maintaining river health. What accounts for this change? This article traces the trajectory of cultural politics around Indian rivers within the larger imagination of the nation, the rise of economic liberalization and Hindu nationalism, and the emergence of environmental bureaucracies. It argues that, alongside being shaped by this context, current anti-dam campaigns also contend with the legacy of earlier social movements, their gains as well as losses. This political field has narrowed the potential for radical critique, large-scale collective mobilization and, ultimately, keeping rivers alive.
