Cranberry Orange Sauce Recipe (1)

I've loved Cranberry Orange Sauce for as long as I can remember. It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving or Christmas with out a large bowl of zesty Orange Cranberry Sauce. When I was a wee little one my Dad tells a story of one Thanksgiving I climbedup on the table and polished off the entire dish of cranberry sauce before anyone realized what was going on.

Oops! Thank goodness I was so cute or they might have been mad at me.

Colt and I had made a large container of Cranberry Orange Sauce recipe for Thanksgiving, but it was gone before we could ever capture a picture so we made another batch of the ruby colored deliciousness to go with a Rosemary Sage Pork Loin Roast we had been keeping in the freezer for the last few weeks. It was so delicious!

Here's how to make Homemade Cranberry Orange Sauce:

Cranberry Orange Sauce Recipe (2)

Combine in a large sauce pan:

  • 6 cups Washed Cranberries
  • 1 whole Orange Zested, Chopped Fine
  • 3/4 cup Orange Juice
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 3/4 Sugar Or To Taste

Stir until well combined.

Tip: I find the darker ruby red cranberries have a tendency to be a little sweeter with better flavor when choosing bags of cranberries. I also avoid bags with wrinkled cranberries and discard any I find when I wash the berries, since the wrinkly berries have a tendency to be soft and starting to go bad. I also look for dark orange, oranges with skin that smells fragrant when purchasing andprefer organic produce when available to avoid any extra preservatives on the orange zest.

Cranberry Orange Sauce Recipe (3)

Bring cranberry sauce to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook until cranberries start to pop open about 10-15 minutes.

Cranberry Orange Sauce Recipe (4)

Serve cranberry sauce at room temperature or cold. Store unused cranberry sauce in the refrigerator.

Sadly all the Cranberry Orange Sauce was eaten during the making of this post and no longer exists in my fridge. We may or may not have a serious Cranberry addiction in our house. I refuse to answer on grounds I'm not ready to give up my little ruby red gems.

I've also been drooling over this Cranberry Casserole over at Best Casserole Recipes. It would make a delicious side dish or dessert.

FAQs

How long does orange cranberry sauce last? ›

To refrigerate, transfer to a covered glass or plastic container, and it'll keep for 10 to 14 days. To freeze, transfer to a covered, airtight container or freezer-safe bag, and it'll stay fresh-tasting in your freezer for about 1 month. Beyond that, it's still safe to eat (though less fresh-tasting) for up to a year.

What makes cranberry sauce thicken? ›

Try reducing the sauce down even further so more of the liquid cooks off and the mixture thickens. If that doesn't work, add a thickener like gelatin, pectin or a cornstarch slurry (cornstarch whisked into juice or water). Let the sauce cool before refrigerating to completely set.

What is the difference between cranberry sauce and cranberry relish? ›

Typically, "cranberry sauce" refers to a cooked product while "cranberry relish" is uncooked (the cranberries instead are broken down in a food processor or other manner)—however, some recipes use these phrases interchangeably.

What are the two types of cranberry sauce? ›

Cranberry sauce can be served either as a gooey liquid or as a solid jelly. The jellied version is solid enough to retain the shape of the container in which it's placed whereas the sauce version is much more fluid. The difference between the fluid sauce and the jelly versions comes down to pectin.

Can you freeze cranberry orange sauce? ›

Yes, when stored properly, you can freeze leftover homemade cranberry sauce. Before freezing, keep three important principles in mind: cool it, wrap it and label it (the same rules apply when freezing homemade meals). First, it's important that any cooked food has cooled down before it goes into the freezer.

How do you know if cranberry sauce has gone bad? ›

Signs of spoilage include cans that are leaking, rusting, bulging, or severely dented. If the top of the can is rounded instead of flat, the cranberry sauce has most likely gone bad. If you open the can and anything is brown or black, throw the cranberry sauce away without a second thought.

What takes the bitterness out of cranberry sauce? ›

"Instead, start by stirring in one tablespoon maple syrup and one teaspoon of a sweet drink like apple juice, orange juice, or fruity white or red wine. Add more to taste. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt (in small amounts, it intensifies sweetness)."

Why is cranberry sauce so expensive? ›

But that's not the case for prepared cranberry sauces, where prices are up. Lochner pointed out that processors set those prices, not growers, and that there are higher input costs unrelated to berries — like “processing the fruit and getting it to market.” Ocean Spray isn't immune either.

Should cranberry sauce be served cold or room temperature? ›

Is cranberry sauce supposed to be hot or cold? Either! Some prefer to have it served fresh and warm, straight out of the pot, while others need it completely cooled down to enjoy the flavours. Personally, we prefer cooled sauce.

What brand is the best cranberry sauce? ›

Best Jellied Cranberry Sauce: Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce. The Ocean Spray brand is pretty much synonymous with all things cranberry, so it's not really a surprise that they have their cranberry sauce dialed in.

What is the difference between cranberry sauce and jellied cranberry sauce? ›

The major variation you're likely to come across is "whole berry" versus "jellied." The only difference between them is that the jellied sauce is cooked until the berries have completely broken down. They both slide out of the can as a wobbly red cylinder.

How do you spruce up cranberry sauce? ›

Spike cranberry sauce with citrus

Adding a teaspoon or two of fresh lemon or orange zest, a tablespoon of chopped candied peel, or even a splash of juice to your canned sauce will brighten flavors and bring in some homemade flavor.

Why is the label on cranberry sauce upside down? ›

According to Ocean Spray, that's intentional: It creates a seamless serving experience. The cans are "filled and labeled upside down with the rounded edge on top and the sharp can-like edge on the bottom to keep the jelly whole," an Ocean Spray spokesperson told CNN Business.

Are Ocean Spray cranberries good for you? ›

Research suggests that there are multiple, powerful elements found within cranberries that are linked to a variety of health benefits. Besides helping consumers meet their recommended daily fruit intake, cranberries work hard for your whole-body and can support urinary tract, stomach, oral and heart health.

What's healthier homemade or store bought cranberry sauce? ›
